Her husband came every day, held her hand, rested his head next to hers, and whispered words of love to her.

To everyone he seemed a model of devotion.

When the doctors announced to him that there was no longer any hope, that her body was slowly failing and the time had come to make a decision, he burst into tears.

It was as if his soul was being cut in two.

He begged to be allowed some time to say his final goodbyes.

Inside the room, tightly holding her frozen hand, he leaned down, gently placed his lips on her forehead and whispered something no one expected.

He had no idea that there was someone behind the door watching his every move.

His words sounded so low, as if they were intended exclusively for her:

— Now all your property belongs to me. Goodbye, my dear.

A plainclothes police officer was watching him.

For several weeks now, there have been suspicions that her condition was not the result of a random accident.

Tests had shown traces of poison in her blood—doses too small to kill immediately, but enough to keep her trapped between life and death.

The authorities decided to set a trap.

The doctors informed the man of his “inevitable end,” while at the same time they had organized secret monitoring.

And then — his confession, thrown into the void, became the key.

He revealed himself.

When he left the room, two uniformed police officers were waiting for him.

At first he didn’t understand what was happening, but when he saw the cold stares he tried to justify himself.

But it was too late.

They led him in handcuffs down the long corridor.

And she remained in the room.

The doctors knew: without the constant poisoning her body would begin to struggle.

And indeed — after a few days the machines showed signs of improvement.

The woman wiggled her fingers and then opened her eyes.

The world welcomed her with a nurse’s whispered message:

— It’s all over. You’re safe.

For a long time he couldn’t understand what had happened.

He learned the truth later.

The man who swore his love to her and sat next to her bed, all this time, was slowly poisoning her.

And what saved her was precisely the moment when he, certain of his victory, could not hold back and revealed his secret.
